had to do what I had been dreading for a while this last weekend. My kitty silver had been sick and losing weight, I had taken to syringe feeding him to try to get his weight up, this last weekend, he tried to jump from the bed to my lap and missed, I picked him up off hte floor bu the scruff of his neck and felt a sickening rip :( his scruff, and some of hte skin it was connected to ripped loose :( took him to the vet and the dr did an exam and he had a billiard ball size mass in his tummy.

the dr said he could clean the area and suture the scruff back but it wouldn most likely not heal as pook's health was on the decline, and that he was fairly sure that pook would be in pain soon from what seemed to be a cancerous growth... so I made the hard choice and had him put to sleep before he really started to hurt... he was wasting away to nothing :( he weighed 5lb 4 oz when the dr weighed him :( and he used to be a 15-20 lb cat...

i'm just torn up over this, and am having trouble sleeping, my mind keeps replaying the sickening rip and the picture of the torn scruff :(

owie!

it's really damn lucky I carry my inhaler.

on Monday I swung past the Woodinville JiB (Jack In the Box)and got breakfast food. 1st sammy was ok, but when I bit into the 2nd sammy, I got the wonderful flavor of mold, tasted like bread mold to me, and I immediately started having breathing trouble and my tongue and mouth swelled up some :( I immediately used my inhaler and took a couple benadryls.

I think that is the last time I'm going to the Woodinville JiB, I emailed their customer service group, because in addition to giving me moldy food, they were deleting shit off their drive through screen before the order was fully assembled and did not give me a receipt either...

a few years ago (after the 2001 dot-bomb when I was laid off from Corbis, I went and interviewed at a small software company that did some custom business billing applications for cellular companies and telecoms. They turned me down because "You don't have any telecom experience".

Recently at my new job, the last remnants of that billing system were just recently laid to rest...

makes me giggle... from what I understand the company has few clients anymore and has laid off most of their staff, according to a few people that I talked to "they were out of touch with the way that telecoms need to do business these days" with their office full of telecom experienced staff, and no real eCommerce experience.... perhaps they should have hired me and those like me who came from an eCommerce background instead of throwing us away because we did not come from a Telecom company....

makes me feel a little better in a way.

According to Google, Gmail does not count the mail that one has thrown away towards your quota... apparently this is NOT so :( [livejournal.com profile] wenchakaalana attempted to send me email to my Gmail account today (I downloaded all the mail last night from it) and got a "permanant failure, user over quota" error message. I cannot log in to it from work here, as gmail, hotmail and yahoo mail are all blocked at the firewall.

so when I get home I need to go and delete everything in my trash on gmail and magically it will start accepting messages again.

I'm kinda torn, there is someone on my friends list that is looking to get a contract done with a non-compete clause for their potential employees...

I hate those things (non compete clauses) mainly because all I have seen is abuse of them through tech employers. at one of my contracts at MS, I witnessed an example of this from a manager who told another employee (who was complaining about the mandatory overtime {we were working 60 to 70 hour weeks}) "You will work what I tell you to, you are just screwed 'cause if I fire you you still won't be able to work in the industry for 2 years with anyone who could remotely be a competitor."

this has been the attitude I have seen at tech places where I have worked and are tech companies...

I'm posting it here because I can see the point of that person wanting a non compete for the industry they are in as it is somewhat specialized and a somewhat limited audience.

Our fridge died on the 1st or 2nd of this month, it took until the 14th for the service plan company to get out to work on it, then they didn't have the part so they have ordered the part and will be back on the 26th to install it. even though they had the model of the fridge and the symptoms, and several appliance repair people I have talked to knew exactly what was wrong with it just from the description (bad evaporator fan motor)so they theoretically should have been able to figure that was the broken part and had the damn thing in the truck or ordered to install...

Nope, they didn't so we are without the fridge until the 26th..... grrr..... it should not have taken 14 ish days in the first place for them to get out here :(

I worked the police concerts wed and thurs.

Wednesday I supervised at the East entrance to Key Arena, it went pretty well, had a few um... creative comments from people getting their bags inspected. There was one gal who informed me that although the catch on her purse was tight and hard to open her 'twat' was tighter... then there were the usual "Awww, you aren't going to pat me down, I was hoping to get felt up" from both guys and gals. of the 4 people that I had working with me, only 1 other was fairly experienced, 'V' has been with CMS for some time, the other 4 were new, 3 of them at least from out of town. 1 from Yakima and 2 from Tri-Cities I think. The guy from Yakima got into the spirit of things (I try to mix things up a bit by having fun at it and getting my people to have fun at it) and was helping me to holler up to get people into line and get ready to get their bags and packages inspected. I 'spose the biggest compliment of the night was when all the people I was in charge of told me that they'd love to work for me again. We got the job done and had a little fun doing it, and still did it efficiently.

Thursday I worked inside. originally I was supposed to be a floor rover, but that got nixed since i was running a little behind (getting there 15 minutes late isn't bad for coming all the way from my 'regular' job in Bothell and fighting the horrible traffic), most of which was due to A: Rush hour happening in the middle of my commute from work to work
and
B: Sold out show at the Key (14500 seats sold roughly)

it was nice to see the arena basically full, not something I've seen many times. I started off watching the Best Buy 'casbah' it was a Moroccan styled lounge put together for the best buy "VIP" guests. from the smells coming out of there I need to go to the Moroccan restaurant that is here in Seattle. then i transitioned to walking the backstage area. after that it was up to keep an eye on Fiction Plane while they signed autographs, they are a great trio, their music is good and all 3 of them are very nice and polite to everyone they talk to (doesn't matter if you are a fan or are working the venue).

after we got them back downstairs and backstage without incident, it was more cruising around and sending people on breaks (while The Police were playing). I thought they sounded better the 2nd night than the 1st, they sounded more cohesive the 2nd time around (for a group that hasn't played together in 25 years until this year it will take a little time to get used to playing together.

At least this has a happy ending (so far)

on Memorial day, Yahoo terminated BBWNorthwest and it's related groups for a "Terms of Service" (TOS) violation, the owner of the group found out as soon as he and his wife had gotten back from a family vacation, and he immediately replied to the email asking what the TOS violation was, and all he got back form the group that handle those things was a cut and paste of "your group violated TOS and was terminated" and to go look at the yahoo TOS. this went on for several days.

He finally managed to talk to a real person and the groups are back for now at least, but it speaks volumes about yahoo and their lack of customer service when they pull a yahoo-group or cluster of groups with over 12000 subscriber users, and then when approached by the owner of the group all they can do is parrot over and over that -something- on the group violated the TOS, they will not even tell which part of the TOS that was violated.

and I find it interesting that yahoo would claim that BBWnorthwest would be in violation of their TOS as Daniel keeps everyone reminded that the list needs to be "PG-13" so as not to have to be classified as an "adult" group and is great at enforcing it

here is the text of the message that Daniel, the owner of the BBWnorthwest mailing list sent to the list today when the group came back.

For those who got a "this group does not exist" message the last few
days when trying to access BBWNorthwest, we were mistakenly taken
offline by Yahoo for some alleged TOS violation.

After we got through to a real live person there (which ain't easy,
believe me!) they turned us back on.

Now let's see...where were we? :)

Daniel
...sending lots of love to those members who sent emails of support!

Hey, I am trying to remember the name of a trilogy i may have mentioned to some of y'all int he past, it is about ships that mine comets? and nebulae for resources, the primary ship in the books has a Rom (gypsy) cargomaster, and the chief pilot of the support workcraft/fighters is also Rom.

I have been trying to remember the name of the books or the trilogy or both. I want to read them again, but to do that I have to get new copies as mine were in storage when i lost it :(

Within the last month(ish) I have gotten a several feelers for positions with Vulcan NW. Personally I would think twice about a position with them (then walk away anyways probably), having worked there before and they forgot to have me sign a NDA/employment agreement (and am I ever glad that they didn't)

The place USED to be good to work (at least the group I worked with) until they started bringing a bunch of Microsoft managers in, then the place went to hell. Some of the tricks that I watched Vulcan play was to fly a manager to a business meeting out of state, then cancel his remote access, shut his card-key off, announce to the office that he was "no longer with Vulcan" CANCEL his return air ticket and his company credit card (so he had to pay his way home himself AND the hotel bill out of his own pocket) Want to know what his crime was? it was twofold. He stuck up for a team member that was made the scapegoat of a security incident, and he was openly Gay and that made the painfully heterosexual male managers above him uncomfortable. I remember overhearing the manager directly over him commenting about him "he should act more straight because his homosexuality is making people uncomfortable."

The poor team member that was railroaded was left with a representative from a vendor that was visiting, and had made arrangements for another person to take over the babysitting of this rep because they had to go to a physical therapy appointment (treatment for injuries from an auto accident that wasn't their fault). so the employee left happily for their PT appointment, reminding the other employee that they were to keep an eye on the rep. the other employee left at 5pm forgetting that the HW company rep was there, and a different manager found the rep in the server room (and the building) alone and raised holy hell about it.

The scapegoats manager had known about the PT appointment, and had okayed the changing of the guard as it were... but when he went to bat for the scapegoat trying to keep him from getting fired, he was informed "either you let -scapegoat- go or your whole team goes" scapegoat had documentation that management knew about his PT appointment and couldn't cancel it without getting hit with a fairly hefty cancellation fee (the vendor was dropped on him less than 24 hours before his PT appointment, without notice.)

Anyways part of the vulcan employment agreement states that you are not allowed to speak about paul allen for the duration of your employment, if you run into him in the hall and say hi and you tell a friend that you ran into him and said hi, they could sue you for violating the employment agreement.

After having been there a while I got called into my managers office and was informed that they did not have a signed employment/nda agreement on file for me and that was a MAJOR violation of Vulcan NW policies, seeing the look on his face I asked him if I was going to get canned (even though -they- didn't provide me one to sign when I started there) he clammed up for a minute and looked REALLY sheepish, and finally responded that it was a terminable "offense". so I looked him in the eye and asked "So, i sign this employment/nda agreement and you are still under orders to can me because of HR's mistake but Vulcan's butt is covered because you got me to sign it before you canned me OR I refuse to sign it and you can me anyways, am I correct in my interpretation?" his response was "I have been told that I am not to answer ANY question like that" looking next to the Employment agreement/NDA on his desk was the printed out email from HR telling him to get me to sign it and then "let me go, quietly".

I asked him for a couple boxes and help to clear my desk out since I was going to get railroaded anyways, he smiled and happily helped me get my things,. reminding me to blow away any personal data on my workstation and he walked me out to my car where I handed him my card-key, thanking him for being a stand up guy and not bullshitting me.

Home Depot

Went to home depot this weekend. I usually don't go there for the customer service because they cut staffing in recent years as a "cost cutting measure" I go there because the prices are usually pretty good.

We stopped in at the Redmond store in the evening, on our way to dinner, and got the items we came for. We then went up to check out, arriving at the registers, NONE of the "manned" registers were lit up and the last cashier was taking her till and leaving. there were about 10 to 15 customers all clustered around the "self service" (we can put 1 employee on the task of babysitting 4 registers to save money) registers.

If we hadn't needed the stuff we stopped in to get I would have been tempted to just drop it at the returns desk and leave. As it was, it took 10 minutes (with 2 hungry kids) to get to the register and checked out.

I guess it's just a minor annoyance.
